MEDPHOT Annual Meeting, 21 September 2023, Amsterdam

The MEDPHOT Annual Meeting took place on September 21st in Amsterdam, bringing together experts, researchers, and innovators in the field of medical photonics. This annual gathering provided a platform for sharing groundbreaking developments in medical photonics, with a strong focus on early disease detection and improved healthcare across key areas like Oncology, Asthma, and Neurodegeneration.

Throughout the day, attendees were treated to insightful presentations from project leaders and PhD students, unveiling their latest research outcomes. These ranged from advanced OCT systems and targeted fluorescence sensitivity, structural and fluorescence imaging in conditions like lung cancer and asthma to laser treatment of prostate cancer, retinal biomarkers for Alzheimers and fluid biopsy analysis platforms. The meeting concluded with a panel discussion on the future of healthcare, featuring distinguished speakers who offered their insights into the evolving landscape of medical photonics. This event underscored the commitment of the MEDPHOT program to pioneering transformative advancements in medical imaging and diagnosis.

Photonics Translational Research

PET scans based on radioactivity, image deviant tissue such as inflammations and tumours. By using light instead of radioactivity, images ten to one hundred times sharper can be produced, which means a cluster of just a few cells can be seen.

NWO MEDPHOT – MRI-Ready Steerable Needles

This research project is part of the MEDPHOT programme and is funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research NWO. The MEDPHOT programme, carried out bij a consortium of Dutch Universities, university medical centres, and companies, aims to develop new optical biomarkers that are needed to realise earlier diagnosis, improved treatment and better quality of life in the fields of oncology, asthma, and neurodegeneration.

5,4 milion euros for Light for a better view of illnesses

An international consortium receives 5,4 milion euro for the programm ‘Licht voor beter zicht op ziekten’. The research is being lead by professor Biofotonica Johannes de Boer of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and will be conducted in the UMCG and the Amsterdam UMC Imaging Center.
