
Prof. Dr. Johannes de Boer
Project Leader
Prof. de Boer is internationally recognized in the field of Biomedical Optics and Optical Coherence Tomography. After his PhD in Experimental Physics, he focused on translational research, bringing physics from bench to bedside, motivated by a desire to provide a direct benefit to society. He has pushed innovation of the technology for blood flow detection (Doppler OCT), and imaging of fibrous structures such as nerves, collagen and muscle with Polarization Sensitive OCT (PS-OCT). Since 2017 de Boer is involved in a collaboration with ARCNL and ASML, focusing on improving metrology for wafer alignment. De Boer has made significant contributions to publications at ARCNL and IP assigned to ASML.

Dr. Jouke Annema
Project 2 Leader
As pulmonary physician, Jouke Annema is specialised in endosonographic techniques that use sound waves to examine lymph glands and tumours of the chest. He has initiated and coordinated a wide range of international studies on how these innovative techniques can be used to improve the diagnosis of various lung conditions. Annema has worked as a pulmonary physician and head of Pulmonary Endoscopy at the AMC-UvA since April 2012. Previously, he was affiliated with the Leiden University Medical Center. He is chair of the Endoscopy working group of the Netherlands Association of Physicians for Lung Diseases and Tuberculosis and secretary of the European Respiratory Society’s (ERS) Interventional Pulmonology working group.

Dr. Peter Bonta
Project 2 Leader
Peter Bonta is Pulmonologist at the Amsterdam University Medical Center, AMC, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. His focus is Interventional Pulmonology, novel imaging and translational research. He is elected as secretary of the Dutch and ERS Interventional Pulmonology assembly and committee member of the ERS EBUS program. In Interventional Pulmonology he is involved in research in Bronchial Thermoplasty (BT), Total Lung Denervation (TLD), lung cryobiopsy (TBLCB) and Endobronchial Ultrasound ((r)EBUS) procedures. Novel innovative imaging including Optical Coherence Tomography, Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy and High-harmonics Generation imaging in these research areas are interlinked to basic science. He was granted for BT / OCT research by a clinical Fellowship and Technical applied sciences grant of the Dutch Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMw), Dutch Lung Foundation and PI of the international BT TASMA trial.

Prof. Dr. Wouter Nagengast
Project 3 Leader
Prof. Dr. Wouter Nagengast is trained as a Gastroenterologist and Pharmacist and currently works in the UMCG as a clinical gastroenterologist with a focus on oncology, advanced endoscopic imaging, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), and submucosal endoscopic dissection (ESD). He obtained a PhD at the Department of Medical Oncology in 2009. During his PhD, he developed several targeted nuclear tracers for molecular imaging and validated them in preclinical models and clinical trials.

Dr. Martijn Bruijn
Project 4 Leader
Martijn is principal investigator and staff member of both the department of urology and the photonics group at the department of biomedical engineering & physics and currently responsible for the urological research lines at the Amsterdam UMC, University of Amsterdam (AUMC-UvA), department of Biomedical Engineering & Physics, department of Urology. He is holder of multiple grants covering several research projects, member of the EAU, AUA, SPIE, COST and ESUT, published over 150 papers covering clinical translation of optical and digital diagnostic imaging technologies and focal therapeutic modalities for benign and malignant disease.

Asst. Prof. Jeroen Hoozemans

After his PhD-project which was focussed on the neuroinflammatory response in Alzheimer’s disease,he addressed in my studies the role of neuroinflammation on the neurodegenerative process. He started these studies in the lab of Prof. Dr. T. Arendt in Leipzig in 2003 and continued these studies as a post-doctoral fellow in the lab of Prof. F. Baas at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. Together with Dr. W. Scheper, he set the stage for a series of successful studies focussed on protein misfolding as a key mechanism in neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. ir. Sanli Faez
Project 6 Leader
Faez is an Assistant Professor of Physics. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Iran, but came to the Netherlands for his Master’s degree. After obtaining his Master’s degree in Twente, he obtained his PhD in Amsterdam. After that, he did research at the Max Planck Institute in Erlangen and at Leiden University before coming to Utrecht. His field of expertise is Nanophotonics. He develops microscopy methods to see the movement of individual molecules.
